Website Analysis: The Chicago Tribune

The Beginning

In the beginning The Chicago Tribune was founded by, James Kelly, John E. Wheeler, and K.C. Forrest. They published there first edition on June 10, 1847. In later years, it was famous for the 1948 U.S. presidential election between Thomas Dewey and Harry S. Truman. The Chicago Tribune made a mistake by predicting Dewey as the winner, and for that mistake Truman carried the headline, “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN.”

Ownership

The Chicago Tribune is owned by the Tribune Media which owns the LA Times, WGN TV, and the Chicago Cubs, and The Chicago Tribune is financed through the Tribune Media.

How The Chicago Tribune uses Multimedia Technology

The Chicago Tribune is active in social media. The user does have the option to post stories on social media sites such as: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, StumbleUpon, Google plus, and you have the option to email as well. To my knowledge of the site it does not gives audience a chance to participate/ talk back to anyone.

How the tribune uses social media

What I have noticed about the site at the bottom of the home page, where it says get unlimited access for .99 for four weeks, it has the Facebook and twitter symbol on the side. when you click either of those it sends you to your Facebook/twitter caption box with the option to post the advertisement. Other than that it fluently uses social media to posts it’s stories.

Overall Critic

Positives

It is connected to social media. The reader does have the option to post the stories onto their Facebook, Twitter, etc. I like that is has some pictures to certain articles.

Negatives

I don’t like the fact that when you click on a certain news story to read the full story, they will force you to register to Facebook or Twitter in order to see the article. The color I don’t too much mind, it’s that the homepage is too cluster full of stories, its not very organized. Im not a big fan of the never ending refresher, every time that you scroll down the page always refreshes itself. I don’t like the fact that they would have stories next to each other that don’t relate to each other. Im not a big fan of the side scroll bar it gets frustrating after a while.

Overall the site has some good things about it, but I think needs a lot of work.
